As per usual, this year's Bumbershoot Festival boasts an impressive (and still expanding) lineup, with local northwest favorites Blitzen Trapper, Thao w/ The Get Down Stay Down, Fleet Foxes, Throw Me Statue, and M. Ward making the bill, as well as headlining acts like Beck, the Black Keys, the Stone Temple Pilots, and T.I.
Also per usual, however, is the steep admission fee. Passes for all three days (Aug 30-Sept 1) are on sale now for $80, and will only go up in price as the Labor Day weekend event approaches.
But there is another way:
One Reel promotions, the local non-profit organization behind the festival's production every year, offers a great volunteer program where you can earn tickets for free. All you have to do is sign up online and they post shifts where volunteers are needed throughout the build-up and preparation for the festival. For every 8 hours logged, you get a free day pass.
The actual work involves various and mindless busywork tasks that go towards putting together Bumbershoot or one of the other summer events that One Reel puts on. I participated last year and easily racked up 24 volunteer hours over the course of the summer by doing things as simple as putting together promo packets and hanging around an info booth for a Saturday. It's that easy.
